MAMA MOON IN YANGSHUO,GUILIN

We went to Yangshuo to spend our vacation as soon as the golden week ended. Well, I guess most of you have heard Guilin, the place where claimed to have the most beautiful waters and mountains in the world. What’s more, Yangshuo is believed to have the most beautiful natural scenes in all of Guilin. Well, it’s indeed beautiful from some points, but we like it to be more natural and less developed. But some areas are really worth exploring if you’ve never seen the real beauty of the mountains and the rivers in it’s natural state, especially in southern china.

The whole trip was nice, small and quiet and relaxing town, with wonderful food and fruit. We stayed in a hostel on the West Street, everything was quite convenient. The whole street was full of gifts stores and bars, restaurants, nothing special compared to those commercial tourist streets we saw in shanghai if not for those bicycle renting places. Basicall all the places in Yangshuo is accessible by bicycles. And because of the nice weather, cycling was a very good choice for us. 5 or 10 rmb/day for one person, very good deal too.

well we just stayed there for two days so not too much to talk about as for some advise for your trip. But here I wanna talk about a cool old lady we met at the foot of the Mountain Moon, and she lives there actually. And we kind of came to looking for her on purpose. I’ve heared of this amaizing old lady from some ccty program introducing some prodigies from the folks. And mamamoon was introduced because of her ability to communicate in 8 foreign languages with tourists from all over the world, and her hospitality and kindness to help numerous tourists. Yet it’s hard to believe that she was little educated and learned all the languages by herself.well, maybe it’s a little bit exaggerated to say that she know 8 languages, I tried her English which was quite ok, but I guess the other languages wouldn’t be as good as her English. But anyway, compared to a old lady from a countryside back ground, she is so amazing! And besides, she is cool and fun, and wins my honor and the honor and friendship from the tourists around the world probably. Oh, btw, she is a tour guide, that’s why she needs to learn these languages and leads the tour. However, she is the oldest tour guide in yangshuo and some young tourists titled her as Mama Moon, which sounds like a caring mother for the friends coming from everywhere. And indeed she is.

Unfortunately, other tour guides are trying to push her out of the game by saying she is dead or she has no time whenever there’s inquiry about her from the tourists, because the poor lady enjoy too much fame for her honesty and kindness. She bargains for the tourists while the other tour guides can actually take the discount part as their commissions. Most of the time she knows price so the bargaining includes everything from hostel to souvenirs. The local people think that she is actually against the rule of the tourism market, so they hates mama moon for standing on the tourists side. So the poor old lady now can only stay home tending her grand children. If we hadn’t gone to her place we could never get her. But I really glad that I made the venture and thus we could enjoy her company in the following day of our trip.

According to her, you can give her a call once you catch on the bus to yangshuo from guilin, then she could have time to go the yangshuo station and pick you up once you arrive.
And the charge would be 20rmb/day for one person, very good price.
